ANDY

MIXED BREED, MALE

One day in August 2014 we received a phone call that a man, walking his dogs somewhere in the wild along the Estoi – Moncarapacho road, had found 2 young dogs which were obviously dumped. He fed them but decided that something had to be done.

We went there to make some pics but had no intention to bring them home as we were full to the brim. But seeing them there at that place, being dumped to die, we could not do less than open our hearts and the boot of the car and take them home.

Both dogs Andy and Anne, about seven month of age then, were absolutely adorable.  They have been spayed, chipped and are now ready for adoption.

ANGELO

GALGO CROSS, BRINDLE, MALE

Angelo, together with his siblings, 7 pups in total were dumped at the shelter in a cardboard box when only a few weeks old. They are now exactly one year.

Galgos make wonderful pets and love to curl up on the sofa near the fire. We have had many come our way and been adopted.

Everyone says how wonderful they are once they get over their initial shyness.

She comes from a breeder Quinta de Sao Fernando in Manteigas, well known to us. Her birth name is AUVA. She is 2.5 years old and very social. She can go for adoption soon.

BEPPY

LABRADOR CROSS, FEMALE

Two lovely dogs, Lab crosses, were dumped in the shelter with some feeble excuse about leaving the country and not being able to take the dogs. Beppy was one of them.

We hear this all the time. Why do people get 2 pups and then dump them later.
They were born in February 2014 and are completely vaccinated, tested and ready for adoption. They do not need to go together. They are very very friendly, playful, social with other dogs and walk on lead.

BOWIE

PORTUGUESE POINTER MALE

The story of Bowie is long and dramatic so just a few highlights and facts.

Bowie lived out in the bushland near the revalidation centre S.Bras. He lived there for 2 years or more, all on his own. No owner, house, food, care or love.

The local people fed him their scraps and left-overs and sometimes he would walk along with someone from A to B. People knew about his presence but did nothing to help him.

In November 2012 he developed what looked like a tumour on his behind. A foreign lady who also used to feed him decided it was time to call in some help and phoned us. After some phoning and logistics, we went to search for him, with our vet to check him out. See photos. The vet concluded it was not a tumour but a hernia and that he would need surgery.

That's how he came to us for help and protection. He was full of sores and wounds as well as old battle scars. He was extremely thin in spite of the food he had been given and trembled from head to tail stump when we tried to comfort him. We put him in our garage kennels reserved for sick and post-op dogs, where he still lives today. I was afraid he would have every Mediterranean blood parasite under the sun but no, all he had was tick fever. First we treated that, then we took him for the hernia surgery and he was castrated at the same time.

After surgery he couldn't eat normal food for a month so I had to cook large pans of pasta with fish as this is very light to metabolise and pass through without pressure on the colon. He has been a real challenge to keep quiet and happy without straining the muscles around the anus. Only short runs 3x a day and in the kennel for the rest. At last he is becoming a normal hunting dog who loves everything and everyone around him. He listens very well to commands and also retrieves.

His coat still lacks lustre but is much improved in texture and so has his colour. He's a wonderful companion and loving pet. He can go for adoption soon to people who love and know Pointers. He needs space to run and do what he loves best........ retrieving balls, sticks etc. He's about 4.5 years old and fine with kids. Ignores cats.

BOY

GOLDEN LABRADOR, MALE

This is BOY, one year old and a wonderful, social young Golden Lab. He was acquired as a gift for in-laws who, unfortunately, did not want him. Are we surprised? No. It's never a good idea to get a dog for someone else. In fact, it's downright disingenuous!

Great dogs end up in shelters this way which is no place for them to be. That's why he is in one of our fosters where he can play with dogs, pups, cats and even get to know horses. Fully vaccinated and neutered.

CARRIE is about 13 weeks old now and very sweet. An old Portuguese lady at the market in Loule pushed her into the arms of a young girl on a working holiday at a friend's farm. Before she even could protest, the woman disappeared into the market crowds.......sounds like a fairy tale doesn't it?

Carrie was lovingly cared for until now but the girl is leving and the dog is without a home. Carrie will go into foster until we find one, hopefully very soon. She has been wormed, vaccinated and advantixed as usual.

CHICA

RAFEIRA do ALENTEJO CROSS, FEMALE

CHICA is a very young cross Rafeira do Alentejo (Portuguese Watch Dog). She was born in May 2015 somewhere in a horrible place where the pups live in squalid circumstances. She was found and taken away by an elderly man who cannot keep her due to his poor health.

She has a wonderful temperament and fitted in immediately with her new foster brothers and sisters. Loves being with people and needs lots of attention. She will be a medium-large adult dog weighing at least 30-35kg but very gentle in her movements.

DANTE

SERRA DA ESTRELA, MALE

Dante was the first Estrela to be rescued from the container. We were allowed to take him away because he had a bleeding wounded ear. As none of the dogs were used to human contact a lot of patience and love was needed to gain his trust. Now he is perfectly in harmony with us, although he keeps a distance to strangers.

We try to socialize him by taking him out to our village. Dante is about 4 to 5 years old. (March 2015)

ELVIS

MIXED BREED, MALE

Elvis is a lovely pup about 3+ months old now (January 2015) and about 34cm high. He was found in the bush by a Portuguese couple who tied him to a tree in their garden to wait for their son who is a hunter and has a rifle. Their idea was that as they couldn't keep him, the best was to get their son to shoot him.

Luckily they told their story to the neighbours who quickly rescued the dog and took him to the shelter for safe keeping. Elvis has been on a sponsored walk and loves people and the other dogs. When he got too tired he had to be carried back and slept for hours.

Elvis is wormed and vaccinated and looking for a loving home with no guns.

FIDEL

MIXED BREED MALE

FLASH and her 3 pups were spotted wandering in the middle of the main road that goes from Alportel to Almodovar. It is a long windy road through hills and desolate terrain with few houses along the highway. Not a good place for mum and pups of 6 weeks old. A friend called us and Ad went to pick them up having no other alternative so quickly.

Mum is very friendly with people and a good mum for her children. Pups are also very social, quiet and play with each other and some toys. No trouble at all.

They live in a patio behind our car port as we have no other place to put them. It is not big but better than being knocked down by a lorry on the main road.

We bring the pups into the house as much as we can to get used to normal life and situations.
Pups have been wormed, had first vaccine and will be ready to go to homes half March. Travel abroad end of March.
Mum is medium size, +/- 16kg and 50cm. We expect Fidel to grow the same.

SERRA DA ESTRELA, FEMALE

Florence was locked up in a very small concrete hut together with her mother Francesca. She was one of the last Estrelas we could rescue.  As none of the dogs were used to human contact a lot of patience and love was needed to gain her trust.

We try to socialize her by taking her out to our village and the first results were not bad. Taking into account that these dogs have never seen other people, cars, traffic or experienced street noises etc. our conclusion was that there is hope. Florence is about 2 to 3 years old. (March 2015)

MOLLY 2

MIXED BREED, FEMALE

MOLLY, is a long wavy haired little dog weighing about 7kg. She is now 6 years old. Her life has not been great. She belonged to en elderly Portuguese couple but preferred to go over the road to her friend Kris for some attention and cuddles. Time went by and Molly's condition started deteriorating. She became ill and Kris took her to a local vet who claimed she was dying from Leishmaniasis and had only a few weeks to live!!!

Out of compassion, Kris took her in to give her a few comfortable weeks of life. But she didn't die after all and in August 2014 Kris took her to the shelter where she has been ever since. What Molly actually had was tick fever so this has been treated and she has made a complete recovery.

Molly is a happy, easy-going little dog and loves a sofa or someone's lap. An ideal companion who can live in a house as well as an apartment. She should not have to live in a shelter. Molly is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for Leishmaniasis (PCR).

ORION

SERRA DA ESTRELA CROSS, MALE

ORION or RIO as we call him for short was found wandering all alone in a huge empty field. He was so pathetic, full of ticks and fleas and summer dirt from the dry earth and bushes. Picked up by holiday makers and taken to the shelter, he was soon recognised as a possible Serra da Estrela pup. We received some mails with pics asking to confirm this and Ad went to pick him up and bring him here to our Serra Haven. He is a very social, quiet and loving pup. He is not as big as some of the pups we've had so I think he will turn out a medium size Serra male with a calm character. He has been wormed, de-flead and ticked and has had 1st vacs.

PICKLE

MIXED BREED, FEMALE

PICKLE was dumped one  November eve, after dark, at the sanctuary together with 2 other puppies. All 3 were totally different. Where they came from no-one knows.

We thought Pickle was a poodle to start with but as she developed it was obvious she had the coat of a silky wavy haired breed and the colours remind me of a Havanese type.
The shelter is no place for pups so she went into our foster family where she blossomed. Pickle flew with me to Holland at the end of January 2015 and has been adopted there.

PORTUGUESE PODENGO, MALE

Piloto is a small, male, rough-haired Podengo we rescued from a killing station in Obidos in 2013.  He was on death row and as we had just had another similar one adopted, we decided to give Piloto a chance to live. He is a bright little fellow but not the most handsome due his ears having been cut as a young dog. He's very social with other dogs but doesn't like seeing cats run past his kennel. He loves cuddles and attention. Walks fine on lead and could live in a small house or apartment as a loyal companion. He is neutered, tested and vaccinated. Is about 6 years' old now.

Sissi was rescued in the second rescue trip and kindly taken in by Dogs of Portugal in their shelter. She was rescued out of a cell with no light at all. Because she was so afraid of everything, afraid of daylight, afraid of people and even afraid of other dogs, we believe that she was not allowed to leave her prison cell ever.

Dogs of Portugal welcomed in their shelter not only Sissi, but also King, Bela, Conde and Lord. They all were very shy although since they arrived they have made progress.

SOLANGE

PODENGO FEMALE

Solange came down from the hills near Estoi to a quinta where there are 2 dogs. Dogs mean food. She was emaciated, very hungry and very traumatised. We presume she was dumped by hunters because she cannot hunt.

Friends in Holland with 2 other rescue Podengos, have taken her into foster now and after some further socialisation, hope to find her forever home in Holland. Podengos are very badly treated in Portugal and Spain and we have to count on help from abroad to home these wonderful dogs. A Podengo is for life, we always say, as once you have had one, you can't live without their inspiring presence.

ZINNIA

PODENGO, FEMALE

ZINNIA is a young Podenga that was rescued running alone on the N125 near Olhao. She is extremely people orientated and almost jumped into a friend's car to be cuddled. All she wanted was human attention.

Zinnia was immediately spayed and tested and has heartworm but because she is young this is easy to treat.

We are looking for a foster to house her after the treatment and until she can be adopted.
