ASTRID     adopted

4 beautiful Galgo cross juniors still for adoption. 3 are in the shelter with Jan and Ashley is with us at home.

7 pups were dumped at the shelter in a cardboard box when only a few weeks old. They are now exactly one year.

Galgos make wonderful pets and love to curl up on the sofa near the fire. We have had many come our way and been adopted.

Everyone says how wonderful they are once they get over their initial shyness.

BARBIE     adopted

BARBIE is one of 5 pups born in Barracha-S.Bras in the wild. After the first vaccination in the field, they were taken to Goldra animal shelter.

Two were adopted very young and there are 3 left. All the pups were completely different in size and colour. Her sisters are Britney and Betty.

Barbie is a Podengo cross with many Podengo characteristics except for the colour as she is a brilliant black. Adorable, intelligent, social with all dogs and cats as well, Barbie is looking for her perfect home.

She is 9 months old now, spayed, vaccinated and tested negative for Mediterranean blood parasites. She is a small medium build and weighs approx 12kg. An ideal dog for a family with kids who love walks as she is quite active during the day. At night she sleeps in a basket and is perfectly clean. Barbie is now in foster with us waiting to be adopted.

BOLOTA     adopted

Bolota is now for adoption. She is a wonderful dog after her terrible ordeal being locked up in a concrete bunker for more than 2 months with her 3 pups.

Bolota is less than 2 years old, weighs 12 kg, is negative for all blood parasites, has been spayed, vaccinated, etc., and is ready to pack her little suitcase and travel to a lovely, kind home.

BORIS     adopted

Boris’ story started with a tragic accident in which he lost his dear boss and family. One morning we received a telephone call about the accident and were told that Boris was sitting next to his boss who died somewhere in the hills north of our village. The only thing we could do was going there and catch him. To our relieve he happily jumped in the car.

As Boris is a big and strong boy we had to find him a place where he could recover from his traumas, so he went to a friend’s house.

In spite of the fact that he is of a potentially dangerous breed he only wants to be loved.

BRAVO     adopted

Wednesday 24/04/13 Adrian went to Huelva with a colleague who is part of an association that do the same work we do here just over the border in Spain at Ayamonte.

The municipal perrera = dog pound, was killing 5 dogs a day due to overcrowding. The association over there tries to help the dogs find homes. There are over 100 in the pound. The helpers, mainly young women, were in tears, frustrated and appealing for help, anywhere and everywhere. The perrera is like a concentration camp for dogs… 3-4 cramped into one small kennel waiting for………!!!   There are many medium/large dogs with absolutely no room to move. We are able to help 7 dogs because we can temporarily house them in the 2 shelters in Goldra, one private foster and ourselves.

BRAVO is one of the 7 dogs rescued from the "killing station" in Huelva, Spain. He is about 18 months old now and very handsome. He lives with a foster family for the moment but they have 4 dogs of their own and cannot keep him there. He goes out off lead for long walks with the family and comes back on call. Obedient and eager to learn and please. Very relaxed personality. He needs to be adopted soon as we do not want to put him into another shelter. This would ruin his lovely character. Bravo is fully vaccinated, tested negative for all blood parasites and castrated.

Eating well, lively, playing together, can go for adoption in 2 weeks Portugal, 4/5 weeks abroad.

FLEUR     adopted

After we received a phone call we had to go and look for Fleur. Fleur was chained  in front of a house as a small puppy and was intended to guard the property. She was wearing a puppy size leather collar, which was never widened when she grew.

The result was that her collar had grown into her flesh. The open wound was full of flies and larvae.

The only reasonable action we could do was to take the dog including the chain and take her to the vet. It was also clear to us that she could not go back to that horrible place.

GEMMA     adopted

About 10 days ago a hunter from Pero de Amigos hunting association, 6km north of Bico Alto in the hills, informed us that a jeep had come up there and dumped a group of pups. Could we please help to capture them as they are running around in the wild. There are no houses anywhere so no food and the pups will starve.

After some strategic moves we managed to catch 2 in a cat trap. We still have to catch another 4! In the meantime, we need to think about adoptions for 6 pups, presuming we can catch them all. They seem to be in very good health, no fleas or ticks or skin problems. It's devastating and very cruel what people do to their own animals.

We hope we can save them and home them all. Please help! Pups are now about 9/10 weeks old at least.

JACOB     adopted

JASMIN'S pups are now with us at home. They were very shy so couldn't go into a shelter but need special care and TLC. Two boys and a girl, now about 4 months' old.

They play in the garden most of the day and sleep in our cattery at night. Yesterday, 05/07 they had a swim with Adrian in the pool. Janey came back for more. Love balls and sticks and anything lying around the garage.

We expect them to grow a little bigger than their mum to become small/medium adults. Have been wormed and vaccinated but still need their boosters. They are certainly not starving anymore now.

JANEY     adopted

JASMIN     adopted

This is JASMIN a small Podengo female, 35cm, 7kg. She was found living in a ruin in Campina with her 3 pups. All were born in the wild and living rough, depending on scraps from kind holiday makers to keep alive. When mum's milk ran out, the pups were starving and this is when we were contacted to help. Jasmin is now in Goldra Sanctuary, spayed, vaccinated and tested.

In a few weeks she can be adopted. She is gentle, loving and only a little bit shy. Loves curling up on the sofa as all Podengos and Galgos do.

They make wonderful and true pets. Vet thinks she is about 18 months old.

JOHAN     adopted

Johan came from the municipal pound, dumped by a hunter as he was not good enough.

JOSHUA     adopted

KODEY     adopted

Kodey was taken away from an  English  lady, who bottle  fed him, but for one reason or the other she had called  for the municipal vet to put him to sleep.

LASKA     adopted

ABANDONED, believe it or not a mum with a collar and 3 pups, no chip or any identification.

Pups are about 7/8 weeks old now (29/09) and will be vaccinated soon. All are for adoption to Husky lovers with knowledge of the breed.

LEEN     adopted

LEEN, brother of LENA and LOTJE. All 3 pups plus their mother were locked up in a concrete bunker, dark, full of household waste, outsize and environmentally unfriendly rubbish, completely imprisoned, waiting to die a horrible death. An unbelievable situation, needed to be seen to be believed. After 2 months of trying to get them released in a proper manner, a night rescue/raid was inevitable. Lena has a home already. Leen would very much like one as well. He is about 5 months now and extremely sweet and well balanced considering his nightmare ordeal.

Wormed and vaccinated..who will give him the stable home he deserves and light up his dark memories? Mum is small/medium size, Lena and Lotje are small and elegant and we expect Leen, as the only male, to grow a bit more solid than his mum and sisters.

LENA     adopted

LENA, small female, approx 4 months old, 36cm tall, weight 4kg was rescued from bizarre circumstances. In spite of this, she is a lovely little dog needing a home.

Good in house, sleeps in crate at night, very playful with other dogs of all shapes and sizes. Independent character. Wormed etc and vaccinated. Longish, silky coat, white and black.

LEXA     adopted

LEXA is a Galgo (Spanish Greyhound) cross. A little smaller than the original breed. She is one of 6 pups brought to the shelter from somewhere near the Spanish border. Two have been adopted and 4 are left, 3 female and a male.

LEXA is now spayed, tested for mediterranean blood parasites and completely vaccinated. She’s a wonderful playmate for kids, other dogs and very social and playful.

LILLY     adopted

ABANDONED, believe it or not a mum with a collar and 3 pups, no chip or any identification.

Pups are about 7/8 weeks old now (29/09) and will be vaccinated soon. All are for adoption to Husky lovers with knowledge of the breed.

LILY     adopted

This is Lily, cross Brittany spaniel, 2.5 yrs old. Lily was found abandoned near Tavira by friends with another of our rescue dogs, Leroy. No identification.

She is gentle, loving and social. Loves to play ball and retrieves. Gets on well with Leroy and any other dogs. Ignores cats outside. Sleeps in her basket and is not possessive with food. Lovely family pet and companion.

Lily has been spayed, vaccinated and tested negative for all blood parasites. She is ready to go for permanent adoption.

LOLITA     adopted

LOLITA is a Galgo (Spanish Greyhound) cross. A little smaller than the original breed. She is one of 6 pups brought to the shelter from somewhere near the Spanish border. Two have been adopted and 4 are left, 3 female and a male. We have fostered Lolita for the time being.

She is 9 months old now, completely vaccinated, tested, spayed and ready for adoption. A wonderful playmate for kids, other dogs and extremely social, craving attention, hugs and kisses.

LOTJE     adopted

LOTJE and LEEN are the siblings of Lena, the bunker pup, already adopted. They are in Goldra shelter at present.

She is shiny black with white feet and has ears that pop up and down. (Podengo?) Inspite of their traumatic time in the concrete bunker,  they are very stable young dogs who need lots of TLC.

Wormed and vaccinated and ready for adoption.

LUAZUL     adopted

ABANDONED, believe it or not a mum with a collar and 3 pups, no chip or any identification.

Pups are about 7/8 weeks old now (29/09) and will be vaccinated soon. All are for adoption to Husky lovers with knowledge of the breed.

MADELEINE     adopted

MADELEINE is a very small, 33cm, 7kg, "toy" female.

She was left at the shelter one night with 3 tiny pups that have been adopted.

As usual, mum stays behind very sad without her babies. We have therefore fostered mum, had her spayed, tested, vaccinated etc and she is now ready for a proper home. Vet thinks she's less than 2 years old.

She lives here with 4 other dogs, male and female, all sizes and gets on with them all. Cats no problem, either. She enjoys running around the garden all day but also likes to be indoors and is very inquisitive, getting her little nose into everything. Sleeps in a crate at night.

MATTY     adopted

This is MATTY. He was abandoned as a pup in a tourist area in the spring of 2013. Residents fed him and kept him alive but didn't do much else. He became full of ticks, fleas and mites etc and his condition deteriorated so much that eventually, at the end of the summer, he was taken in by a temporary resident and treated by the vet for tick fever as well as being thoroughly checked and tested.

Matty is now about 10 months old and in foster where he lives with several other dogs and cats.

He is castrated, fully vaccinated and tested negative for Mediterranean blood parasites.

A very social and playful little dog, Matty weighs 9kg and stands about 46cm. He is brown and cream with freckles and has a very soft, wavy coat.

A wonderful little pet for a lively family with kids.

MERLIN     adopted

MERLIN, a beautiful CROSS BRITTANY SPANIEL was first spotted wandering the countryside around Sao Bras, then he disappeared into thin air only to be found 20 km away in the Tavira area 3 weeks later. How? We don't know but presume he was caught in order to be dumped elsewhere. Instead of finding homes for the stray dogs, people entice them into their car, drive 20km, open the door and throw them out. That gets rid of their personal stray dog problem.

This is a lovely, gentle young male about 1 year old. Good with people, kids and other dogs.

Merlin has been castrated, vaccinated, tested and currently weighs 16kg . He should not grow any bigger but needs a bit more flesh on him as do all the dogs rescued from the country.

NOKI     adopted

NOKI is the last pup left from a litter of 10 born Xmas 2011 in a hollow tree trunk near the cork factory in S.Bras.

His mother is a beautiful, long haired German Shepherd. Father unknown but had his influence on the genetics of Noki. Noki has a loving temperament and gets on with all the other dogs, male or female. He is intelligent and eager to learn. Shy at first meeting with strangers but this is typical of shepherd dogs. Good with our 7 year-old grandson, playing, running, balls and anything to have a tug-of-war with including my towels! Loves to lie on arm chairs but sleeps in a crate and is completely house trained. He is small for his breed, short haired, muscular but skinny and needs to put on some more weight.

Neutered, vaccinated etc. Lives with us and not in the shelter. Will make a lovely, affectionate pet.

NORA     adopted

Poor little NORA was found on the road in S.Bras-Campina by a very concerned English gentleman.

She was bleeding and being mounted by several males. She could not defend herself but he managed to entice her into his garden with some nice raw liver.

This is when he called us and we came and took her home. She was very scared and nervous but also very much wanting to be stroked and cuddled.

Nora was spayed 3 weeks later (had 7 foetuses) tested negative for Mediterranean blood parasites and is also fully vaccinated.

She is in the shelter now and getting more social every day. We believe she is about 16/18 months old and weighs 12kg. She is fine with all other dogs and ignores cats. WHO can give her that special home with love and protection?

PANDORA     adopted

PANDORA was very badly treated by a German guy who eventually left her behind with a broken right leg to fend for herself. Luckily a concerned neighbour brought her to the shelter at Goldra.

The fracture was old and had healed so badly that she had her leg swinging in the air when she walked or did her business. Funny to watch but she had no future in this condition. We fostered her and her leg was operated on by a professional, orthopaedic vet.

She has to stay 2 months in a crate with only very short walks on the lead, no running, jumping whatsoever. She is improving every day, is lively and makes her presence known most of the time.

Will be spayed soon and can be adopted end of April. Is about 3 years old, negative for Leish and dirofilaria.

RAGGY     adopted

Raggy is one of the 7 dogs we rescued from the killing station in Huelva. The municipal perrera= dog pound, was killing 5 dogs a day due to overcrowding. The association over there tries to help the dogs find homes. There are over 100 in the pound. Raggy told us he was one of the first to go.

He is about 3 years old and weighs 10 kg, a bit shy to start with but affectionate none the less. He needs lots of TLC. The killing station is like a concentration camp for dogs, quote Adrian, with 3 or more in one cell waiting to see what's going to happen to them.

Raggy has been wormed, castrated, vaccinated and tested negative for mediterranean blood parasites.

He is now waiting for a loving home.

REMI     adopted

REMI is a small-medium sized young male of 12 kg with some Brittany Spaniel features.

He is less than a year old and as often happens was bought as a pup for a child's Xmas present. We can imagine a small, white ball of fluff in a little basket.

By 6 months he was "too big" for the apartment and was relegated to the outside veranda where he was forced to stay barking all day in the hot sun. Neighbours complained and also alleged that Remi was often hit when he had done his business on this veranda.

He is a lovely boy, a bit nervous at first but getting better the more self assured he gets. He walks on lead and loves human attention. He is castrated and vaccinated and can be adopted by a caring person who will treat him as a friend and companion and not as an "item" on a veranda.

RICKY     adopted

Ricky is one of the 7 dogs we rescued from the killing station in Huelva.

He is about 3 years old and weighs 11.5 kg, a bit shy to start with but affectionate none the less. He needs lots of TLC. The killing station is like a concentration camp for dogs, quote Adrian, with 3 or more in one cell waiting to see what's going to happen to them.

Ricky has been wormed, castrated, vaccinated and tested negative for mediterranean blood parasites.

He is now waiting for a loving home.

RIO     adopted

RORY and RIO were rescued from the killing station Huelva where they keep 3/4 dogs in one pen.

There is no room for them to move or exercise at all.

Both are 2/3 years old and weigh around 17kg.

Both castrated, vaccinated and tested negative for Leishmania, heartworm and tick fever. Rio is still a little reserved but doing fine.

RITA     adopted

RITA, found wandering the countryside between S.Bras and Loule, very pregnant and lonely.

She is a lovely little female, about 15 months old, weighing 12.5kg. Extremely social with everyone as well as all our dogs big and small.

Has a lovely silky coat and beautiful eyes. Will be vaccinated and tested soon. Rita will make someone a lovely companion as she is very affectionate and walks well on lead.

Please help adopt this doggy.

RORY     adopted

RORY and RIO were rescued from the killing station Huelva where they keep 3/4 dogs in one pen.

There is no room for them to move or exercise at all.

Both are 2/3 years old and weigh around 17kg.

Both castrated, vaccinated and tested negative for Leishmania, heartworm and tick fever. Rory is extremely social in spite of his traumatic past, Rio is still a little reserved but doing fine.

RUDI     adopted

RUDI is the smallest and oldest of dogs to come from the Huelva killing station. Poor boy, he's a real pet and house dog. Walks on lead, asks to go out for toilet, sleeps on chairs, sofa and cuddled up to the other dogs, large or small. Fine with cats. Ideal for an apartment.

Rudi is 5/6 yrs old, weighs only 6.5 kgs, wormed, castrated, vaccinated and tested negative for mediterranean blood parasites. He seems to be a mix Tibetan Spaniel.

SISSY     adopted

Sissy is a young Podengo cross female, 8 months old, that had a "hell" of a life so far. She was found 4 months ago by some rubbish bins in Fonte Santa, near Quarteira, Algarve. She had a collar and some rope around her neck and was thin with fleas and ticks. She followed a lady back to her car.

This lady lives in Sao Bras, so after asking around for the owner, she took her home. Lady lives in an apartment and after a few days decided she could not keep the  young dog in there. She looked for someone for the dog but no-one wanted her so she took her to the municipal vet who put her in his temporary holding kennel at the depot in S.Bras.

Those kennels, 2 of them, are about 2x2m, concrete with no dog house to shelter in and no outside run.  Very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. They are surrounded by wheely-bins. The dogs live in their own excrement until cleaned out and let out. At the weekend, there is often no-one to do that until Monday. Sissy stayed in there for FOUR months and the lady did nothing more for the dog.

3 weeks ago someone told me about this situation. There were 2 lovely dogs in there that we immediately got out and took to our home. Sissy is now happy and looking for a permanent home. She is spayed, tested, wormed and vaccinated and has a beautiful, brindle coat. She's extremely lively and playful, loves other dogs and kids and is very intelligent as all Podengos are.

SPIKE     adopted

SPIKE is a super, duper young rough haired Podengo male, abandoned and dumped in the campo. How can you dump a boy like this?

He is 5 months old approx and will be a small/medium adult. Vaccinated and wormed. Loves people, other dogs and tennis balls.

Who will take him home for ever?

STEVIE     adopted

TOMMY     adopted

TOMMY is a cross cocker spaniel found abandoned in Olhao about a year ago. His right ankle joint was broken but no-one did anything about it. I saw him in the shelter in April this year, a sad, forlorn doggy walking on 3 legs, if he walked. Most of the time he just lay there. He had given up on mankind, I'm sure.

In Sept we decided to take him out of the shelter and bring him home to our "hospital" garage kennel. After just a couple of weeks he began to feel much happier and chased around the garden on his 3 legs with other dogs we house there temporarily. Our vet Ana agreed to amputate the useless leg but unfortunately Tommy tested positive for heartworm so we had a long delay in order to treat that first. Now, 10 days ago, Tommy had the surgery to remove the leg.

He is fantastic, running around and lying on his back rolling and playing with little Kiki and having a great time. He is completely dedicated to Adrian. Tommy is a different dog now and we are looking for an adoptant who will love and care for a handicapped dog.

WINNIE     adopted
