Alma, born around July 1, 2017, was found with her two brothers because she cried so loud that people went searching for her. She was found a few hundred meters from the house, starved, dehydrated (because it was almost 40 degrees in the shade) and of course covered with fleas and ticks. She was lovingly picked up and taken home, immediately received the medical care needed and completely recovered after a few weeks. But these people already have 6 dogs and 3 puppies extra is too much. Alma knows that she has been saved by people and makes that very clear in her behaviour. She is now in a foster home and loves people. Alma will be a good medium size dog.

BEAR

Bear, a big name for a small dog of 7 kg and 33 cm high, born 1 July 2016, was found together with his sister Hope when he was a few weeks old. From that moment on he always lived in the house with children, cats and other dogs where he was in temporary shelter. Due to changed circumstances in his shelter family, we are now looking for a new home for him. It is a lovely little dog, who will feel at home in his new home from the very first minute. He can be in a family with young children, older children or no children or with older people. He is just a happy dog, always and everywhere. He likes to be picked up and cuddled. Loves going on a walk and loves to travel in a car.

BEN

Our vet is open from 9 o'clock in the morning until 9 o'clock in the evening, but that is not long enough for some people. On a bad morning there was a box in front of the door with a small puppy in it. We call him Ben. Ben is estimated to have been born around December 1, 2017 and will remain a small dog. With 3.5 months it weighs less than 3 kg. He looks like a mini shorthair collie. At the moment he lives with our vet in the clinic, but as soon as he has had his vaccinations he comes to us. He is very social towards cats, dogs and people and would be best in place in a family with (small) children.

CARLOS

Carlos, born around November 3, 2017, was about 6 weeks old when he was found in the garden of a vacant rental villa. The woman who found him brought him directly to our vet Dr. Carlos (hence the name) where he was put on a drip immediately. But now he has been recovered completely and he is looking for a lovely family where he can be happy forever and where he no longer has to worry about being thrown over a fence again. Carlos now weighs 2.1 kg with almost 9 weeks and we think he will not grow very big.

CHICO

POODLE, MALE

Little Chico was found wandering in the countryside around deserted houses in a small hamlet. Some people fed him and others tried to find his owner around that area. Three months later, he was still wandering around but a few kilos lighter and not looking very happy at all.

He is such a lively, social boy..how is it possible that people just left him to fend for himself?

Chico is now in a foster family with 6 other dogs  looking for a permanent home where he gets fed twice a day and needn’t worry about where his next meal is coming from or where he is going to shelter from the pouring rain.

He is about 3 years old (born July 2015) and weighs 8 kg. His colour is creamy white with a few beige patches. His coat is the curly type, easy to brush and groom.

He loves walks and playing with the other small dogs. Would be great in a family with children.

Felix fell into the hands of a hoarder who did not have the financial means and the physical and mental strength to take good care of her animals. In July 2017 a large number of dogs and cats were taken and Felix has been living in our shelter since then. He is a very social male, both to people and to other dogs. He is also used to living with cats. He walks well on the leash and likes to go out for a long walk. Felix was born on February 18, 2014 and weighs 8.5 kg.

Felicity was found roaming the streets. No owner could be found. She is a lovely girl who deserves a home of her own. She was born in January 2016.

FOXY was left in the early morning  at the door of our local pet shop, probably pregnant. When the shop owners arrived to open the shop, there she was tied to the door handle!! This is what people do when they are desperate to get rid of a dog, for whatever reason. They dump the dog when no-one is around and run away.

People looked for the “owner”,  put out posters etc but no-one turned up to claim this little red-brown, bundle of fur.

Now Foxy is looking for her forever home. She can’t spend her life in a pet shop however much food and cookies are around there. She is very lively, social with all people, dogs and cats, walks well on the lead and is small.  Foxy is about  2.5 years old, 34cm, weighing 6kg. Spayed, vaccinated and house trained.

GWEN

Gwen's owner was a shepherd in the north of Portugal and one of Gwen's tasks was to guard the flock of sheep and to fight the wolves. But when the wolves came, she ran back to the village as she is not a pedigree Cão da Serra da Estela but half a Golden Retriever. This is why she came to our attention. She is about 3 years old and weighs 42 kg.

HUXLEY

Huxley was found, along with his siblings and mother, in the closed grounds of an abandoned house. How they got there is unknown, but at least they could not get out. Probably the mother dog is left behind and the people just left, because that is very common in Portugal. We think that the puppies were born there and that the mother had to raise her offspring without any food given or any other help from outside. Fortunately it rained in those months, so they had water. When found, the pups were at least 10 weeks old and all malnourished. Huxley and his sister Haya came to our house and have long forgotten what they have been through. Huxley is now ready to go to a house of his own where he can play and enjoy life. He is a very social puppy, can get along with all dogs and is also used to cats. He loves people and children. Huxley was born in early January 2018 and, although very lightly built, will become a medium to large dog. We are now looking for a loving family, preferably with grown up children.

Inca and her sister Isha were found in the wild near a cat colony that was being fed by local volunteers. There were 3 pups, about 10 weeks old at the time, all very ill, taken to the clinic by a kind lady where one died. The two sisters recovered and the lady took them home. Because she works all day, the pups were fed morning and night and left in a run for the rest of the time. One month ago, we were asked to help them. They are now about 9 months old and needed to be spayed after their first heat then. They came here for a week just before and after the surgery and are really very nice girls, a bit timid the first day but fine after they get to know you.
Because they are medium size and social we would love to find them a home. They will have no life at all if they have to stay in a small run for the rest of their lives. They do not need to be adopted together.
Inca weighs 17 kg. Estimated date of birth 02/04/2016.

Jacko came to us and from the beginning he felt completely at home. He did not have any traumas from his stay in that awful place. He is very social with other dogs and loves people. He is well on the leash and has definitely had a home. Jacko was born around September 1, 2016, weighs 14 kg and because of his short legs he is only 36 cm tall.

Jacky came to us and did not know what happened to her. But after a few days she learned that there are also nice people in this world who you can trust. When we see her now running around and playing with other dogs it seems that she has already forgotten her stay in that hell hole. She is very social with other dogs and loves people. She walks well on the leash and definitely must have had a house in the past, because when she entered our house she knew what a chair and sofa should be for. For dogs to lie on of course. Jacky was born in March 2014 and weighs 12 kg.

Jody belonged to an old lady who was taken into a home. Her dogs were just left behind and fed by the neighbours.

A tiny puppy needs more than this so he was taken into foster by a friend and needs a permanent home.

Jody will stay small. He is 3 months now and weighs only 3 kg. He loves to be handled, cuddled and will make someone a wonderful companion. Estimated date of birth is 06-11-2017.

Linette was found in a ruin without a roof, of which there are so many in the hinterland of the Algarve. Nobody knows how she ended up there. What we do know is that she is very social and craves for attention and love. She loves people, children, she is good with other dogs and with cats she has no problems. She is born in November 2016. Who can offer her a house with a roof so she will stay dry when it rains. Linette weighs about 11 kg.

LOGAN

Logan was probably born on 1 January 2018. When he was about 4 weeks old, he was handed over to the shelter. No one knows where he comes from. Was he found or was he simply unwanted. Probably the last because in Portugal nobody wants to have a black dog. Black dogs will bring bad luck. Fortunately, this is different in the Netherlands and Belgium. There black dogs bring an abundance of happiness and are an asset to every family. Therefore we are looking for a family that can use some extra happiness. Logan with his beautifully shiny fur looks very much like a labrador and he will probably grow to that size.

Melvin, a pitch-black male, was born around October 24, 2017. When he was about 5 weeks old, he was found in someone's garden and from that moment he lives with a foster family. With 11 weeks he weighs 8.5 kg and is 35 cm tall. He has a firm body and relatively short legs. It will not be a big but a very powerful dog. He is incredibly friendly, but still a bit hesitant with unknown people and situations. He walks very well on the leash, but can also just walk along. He loves the beach and water. He is well used to other dogs and cats.

NICKY

People walking their dogs had seen Nicky as a small puppy near an old house in the country side, where an old lady used to live with her animals. No one knows what happened to that lady. She was gone and the house was uninhabited. Has she moved, was she dead or has she been admitted to a retirement home? Whatever the case may be, the pigs broke out of their enclosure and are now free in the campo looking for food that they can find in abundance. The walkers started to feed Nicky and Nicky joined them on their walks. But nobody really wanted to take care of her. Until someone called us with the question if we could help Nicky. All the shelters in the neighbourhood are full to the brim as are we, but when we were told that the dog was a bitch and about 7 months old we could do nothing but pick her up. Because, if not, people would call us in about three months time with the question whether we can arrange for the care and adoption of 10 more puppies. Nicky is a very sweet and calm dog with a very stable character. We think she has a lot of labrador in her and certainly its character. She is good with all people, children, dogs and also used to cats. She has been sterilized and therefore we are looking for a loving young family where she can be happy for the rest of her life. We think that Nicky was born early July 2017 and with 7 months of age she weighs 21 kg.

Lovely Perdita came to us and what a jewel she is. Gentle, sweet, calm, friendly. Lovely with people. Good with other dogs. Good on the leash. Obviously a dog that had a home one day….
She is deaf but this is not uncommon with Dalmatians. And she can still make a wonderful pet.

RITA

Rita, a mother dog of about 3 years (born August 2014) got her pups somewhere in the field. She was a good mother and her 4 puppies grew like cabbage. In Algarve,  it has been very hot with temperatures above 40 degrees, causing the asphalt of the road to melt. She apparently fed her puppies, lying on her side on the hot melted asphalt, because both her 4 puppies and mother Rita were full of tar. For Rita it was even so bad that her left ear was completely black of the tar and we even thought she was stuck/glued on the road. The puppies were taken by a rescue organization, because for puppies it is easy to arrange adoptions, but for mother Rita there was no place in their shelter. And so they just left her behind. When we heard this, we could do nothing but get Rita and now she is with us. With a lot of love and care we have been able to remove all the tar. Rita let us do this painful operation and we had the impression that she knew we were just good for her. Rita turns out to be a very nice bitch and we therefore look for a loving home for her, where she never has to sleep on the asphalt again. Rita weighs about 12 kg.

SAFARI

Safari was born on November 3, 2017. He is very much alive now and can - if adopted - get a wonderful life thanks to our veterinarians Sophia and Pedro Caramelo. What has happened, you will ask. A customer, who came to Pedro with her dog, told him that she had seen a dog laying in the middle of the street, apparently run-over and probably dead and that all cars were just driving around her. Pedro immediately jumped into his car and picked up the dog. Arriving at the clinic, a first investigation showed that she not only had a broken leg and a dislocated hip but she was also heavily pregnant. She was in shock and could not be operated. 3 days later 8 puppies were born. The mother dog was fantastic. Despite the pain of her broken limbs she fed her puppies, cleaned them etc. The mother dog is small and weighs about 12 kg. The puppies were kept in the clinic and therefore very social. Sophia and Pedro have arranged a special puppy place but of course they can not stay there for long. We expect the pups when adult will be larger than the mother, probably they will grow into a medium size.

SANDOKAN

Sandokan was found in such a state that you could not see what was his front or tail. His weight was about 10 kg. After he has been shaved a nice little boy appeared, only 7 kg. Estimated date of birth is 1 january 2016.

SELINA

Selina was born on November 3, 2017. She is very much alive now and can - if adopted - get a wonderful life thanks to our veterinarians Sophia and Pedro Caramelo. What has happened, you will ask. SEREIA

CAO DA SERRA DA ESTRELA, FEMALE

SEREIA which means MERMAID in Portuguese came to us from another rescue centre colleague the first week in October 2017. She called me in desperation because she had a Serra da Estrela female who needed a place to stay immediately. We are well known for our work with Estrelas so we went there, 40 mins drive,  the following day to meet the dog. We were greeted by a very stable, laid back Serra giving us her large paw. Typical female behaviour. She was in a state. She had a huge open cyst on her back, her coat was thin and matted and you could put your fingers into her ribcage. Her feathers were full of urine and dried up faeces. She had been totally neglected and subsequently abandoned.

Her cyst was removed and cleaned up the next day by our colleague’s vet. The wound had about 14 stitches and her coat had been shaven about 30 cm all round her back. She looked dreadful and I had to pick her up the next day because there was nowhere to put her in the shelter and a kind man had offered to keep her in his tiny apartment until I could go.

When I drove her back to Sao Bras, the car reeked of old urine and she tried to force her way onto the passenger seat. All she wanted was cuddles and attention. She trusted me completely and that has not changed.

We soon noticed she also had a couple of mammary tumours and after a few weeks of good food, immune system boosters, etc etc she went to our own vets in Faro to be spayed and have the tumours removed. We then have all bloods done to determine the general health of the dog as well as the special blood tests for Mediterranean parasites. This is part of our protocol for rescue dogs  in dire conditions. All tests were fine and negative for parasites.

Sereia is always very “cool” during visits to the vet and convalesces well. She has now been vaccinated, chipped and will be able to travel to a new home soon. Her estimated age is about 5. She walks very well on lead, is very social with people, pups, cats, other male dogs but not really with other females. She seems to be jealous of them getting attention. This could change with time but we would only place her with males at the moment. She does not run around the garden a lot, she walks. She sleeps in a kennel at night and also for time out. We are looking for a home with people with some experience of the breed if possible.

SIMON

Stanley was born on October 24, 2017, we think. To his luck he was found - only 4 weeks old - somewhere in a field, all alone, no mother dog in the neighborhood and no brothers or sisters . Probably he was dumped there and he had to figure out by himself how to stay alive. But now he is in good hands. He is being taken everywhere by his foster mum and thus will become a super social dog. In any case, he is a lovely puppy with beautiful blue eyes at the moment. We expect that he will be small medium when adult.

TEJO

RAFEIRO DO ALENTEJO, MALE

Tejo, born in April 2015, had a happy life until his owner could no longer pay the rent because he lost his job. His boss was removed from the house and Tejo was no longer allowed to live in his luxury dog-house and was locked up in an old pigsty. Everyone got involved in this problem, but nobody foundh im a solution. When we heard this, we could do nothing but get him out of that loft and look for a new home for him.

VANIA

Kids love playing at venues like Splash and Slide in the summer.
But do pups belong there? We dont think so?
Sadly this was the case of a stray mother dog and her litter. But along the busy road, mum and two pups got killed. So the rest of this family where picked up and rescued by one of our colleagues before they met the same end.
Pups are now about three months old, so born 10 February 2018, friendly and living with lots of cats. They will be medium sized adults.

Father and mother are unknown, but judging from the outside, the father or mother is probably a Portuguese water dog. Wanda will become a medium-sized dog, we think, who will love water very much.

ZEPPLIN

Zepplin, born around September 20, 2017 did not know what happened to him, when he was put in a plastic container just 8 weeks old, together with 2 brothers and placed next to the rubbish container. Fortunately, a young Dutch woman passed by earlier than the garbage truck and that was his rescue. Now he is in good hands in our shelter and is looking forward to a home of his own where he will be loved for ever. We expect him to grow to a good medium size dog.
