ARTY was found all alone in a field. No other dogs or pups around at all. Poor Arty. He was taken to a shelter by kind people and then came here to us to find his forever home. Well for such a sweet boy that was not difficult.

He will travel end of September to a lovely family and join another one of our rescues BEN. We wish them all a long, wonderful life together.

When a friend of ours went shopping, she saw Baixo sitting under the guard rails of a not very busy provincial road. And when she came back after an hour, he was still there. There was nothing she could do but stop and take him home. Attempts to find the owner failed and he is now for adoption. Baixo is a cross Dachshund, a little over 1 year old, weighs 11 kg and stands 32 cm at the shoulder. He's fine with people he knows, very social with other dogs, plays with the cat when the cat wants to or is in awe of the cat when it doesn't. We are now looking for a nice family where he can live forever.

BRAGA

BRAGA is a small female doggy born from a much smaller mum who has puppies every season. Braga and her mum, see photos, just run around free in the countryside and are fed by a man who gets the food donated by a kind lady. But food just makes for more and more pups if the females are not neutered. Some of the pups were being given away but many died.

We were approached for help and acted immediately.

Braga is now spayed and tested and will be vaccinated soon. She is a very social doggy with other dogs and cats and humans. Her estimated date of birth is 20.05.2020 and she weighs 7.5kg.

We are looking for a home with a family with a big heart and lots of energy, can have kids and cats, no problem at all.

BUDDY

Buddy was found on the road as a puppy, injured. No one knows where he came from. He was taken to the local municipal pound. A Dog lover saw him there and got him out.
He was treated for his injuries and is now completely recovered and healthy.
Buddy has been in a temporary loving foster family since then but he needs his own home and safe basket. He is very social with people and other dogs of all ages. Loves to go out in the car and on long walks on the lead of course. Affectionate and attentive. Who can give this doggy the life he deserves?
Buddy was born beginning of 2018 so now three years old. A good age as no more puppy problems.

He weighs 20 kg and is 55 cm tall.

Dani was less than 9 weeks old when he was involved in a traffic accident. It is not clear to us whether he was the cause of the traffic accident or the victim. He was taken to our vet by the men of the fire brigade for further examination and there it turned out that he had suffered no physical or psychological damage other than some superficial scrapes. And as often happens, he then came to us with the request to find him a loving home. Dani’s estimated date of birth is November 24, 2020 and we think he will grow to small medium size when adult. Dani is a very social puppy, who likes to play with other dogs but also loves to be around people, but because he is so young, of course, he also has a lot to learn.

Damson is one of 7 pups born at our home on the night of the Strawberry Full Moon, 23/06/2021. Mother dog came to be spayed but was 6 days off having the pups and our vet thought it was too risky for her. We agreed to wait for the babies to be born!

Mummy dog is small, about 9 kg and the pups are small, too. Will be small adults we expect. But not small in personality. Integrated with humans from day one, they are extremely social and playful. They also love other pups and dogs and people/kids. Will make wonderful family pets and companions.

Mum will be spayed soon and will also go for adoption. We could never put her back from where she originally came. No way.

DIANA

Diana was born around November 5, 2020, probably in a house with people who did not like to sterilize their bitch. And when puppies are born you just give them away to friends and family. But after about eight weeks there will be a problem because nobody wants to have a female pup and so it happened that something terrible was going to happen to Diana. What could be easier than putting such a small puppy in the car, driving a few kilometers to the hilly outskirts, putting the puppy out of the car because there is no one around who could see that and then again drive home and tell the crying and sad children that the puppy now lives with very nice people who have adopted her. Of course this story is made up, but it could also be true. When Diana was found in the countryside she looked very good, not skinny, no fleas and ticks and it was also certain that she could not have walked there by herself. Diana was found by the dogs of a friend who runs her training laps for running competitions in that hilly countryside. When she got home it also turned out that Diana was used to a house and walked in and out uninhibitedly as if she had always lived there. At 9 weeks, Diana weighs 2.7 kg and we expect she will weigh less than 10 kg when she is an adult. We are now looking for a house for her with very nice people.

DINA

Last year, her owner was taken ill and went to a home for the elderly. Dina and her companion Dion were left on the property. This is what they do here in Portugal. A kind friend of the owner continued feeding the two dogs not knowing what to do with them. Luckily, that man uses our vets in Faro and approached them for help. They in turn asked us for help. We agreed to take in the two dogs even though we had no space except for the small emergency kennel we have in the car port.

Those two could not be left where they were. I had asked a couple of well known shelters for help but they said “no room at the inn”. We have no room either, we are OAP’s but somehow we make that little bit of room that saves and changes  a dog’s life forever. Both dogs tested positive for heart worm and had to do the long treatment because of their ages. But they were never ill and withstood the treatment lasting 3 months, very well. Dion put on weight and Dina lost weight as she was far too fat. The term “roly-poly” comes to mind.

Now they are in a dog run down the garden and enjoying their space to run around, interact with other dogs and people. Dina is great with people, walks well on the leash in spite of her guarding role. Dina’s year of birth is 2015 but we have no way of truly knowing. Dina is now a beautiful female [spayed of course] and we want to find her a five star, forever more, home. Can you offer that home???

GRACIE

LABRADOR FEMALE

If you live in England, a black Lab is a “holy” dog. Everyone loves a black lab. Country “gentry” all have Labs, either black or beige. You see them in films, in TV series, at county shows, everywhere. Man’s BEST FRIEND. Here in Portugal they are just another dog to throw out when pregnant!!

That’s what happened with Gracie. She had her pups in the countryside hiding under bushes. She didn’t know what to do with them so she kept moving them around in the very hot sun. Most of them died. She was caught and taken to a shelter that really had no space for her. At the same time, another abandoned mum with pups died there. The pups survived so Gracie became their surrogate mother as she had plenty of milk left from her own pups. These pups are now being fostered by a friend of ours and when we went to fetch them we took pity on Gracie and brought her here to our doggy home.

Gracie is a lovely, calm girl about 18 months old, estimated date of birth 14.02.2019. Who can give her a permanent home where she can be loved and live without the stress of being shifted around the country?

GUIDA

Guida, born on April 1, 2019, did not know at that time that April 1 is a special day for many people, but for her life was no joke. Life for her was a constant struggle to stay alive. As a young puppy she ended up in the shelter after a life on the street and just like on the street she had to be and remain friends with everyone in the shelter in order to survive. And that has shaped her character. But despite her social character, she was always overlooked in the shelter. Maybe she wasn't pretty enough or she never insisted on being in the front row when visitors came to look for a dog. But eventually she too was allowed to go to her own house as a friend for another dog that had been around for some time. But that other dog thought she was an intruder, and after a month or so, those people decided to bring Guida back to the shelter. When we heard this story and saw her in a picture, we promised ourselves that we will find Guida a house of her own where she is welcome for always.

This is Hermes. Abandoned but very much alive.
Very sweet, social boy with people and all dogs he plays with. Looking for a family with time and energy. Kids no problem.

Hope was born in 2010 and was collected as a puppy by a hoarder and lived in very bad circumstances the first 5 years of her live. Then all dogs were removed by the police and Hope landed in a municipal shelter where the conditions were not much better. Another 5 years passed and she found her lucky day on which she was allowed to leave that horrable place and moved to a private shelter. It is time for her to experience a normal live in a loving home.

Last summer Josefina’s owner died suddenly from a tragic fall. Her husband, in a wheelchair most of the time, was taken back to his native Scotland by his children. Their other three dogs, Podengos, were able to travel to Scotland to live with members of the family. 

We agreed to take in Josefina. She was overweight but has lost quite a few kg now and is more active than she was. She is an Alpha type and is not very keen on other females who she regards as competition. Males are better if she likes them and vice versa. With people she is very affectionate and loves attention. She will climb on your lap, sit for a treat and give you a paw, and even go after a toy that she takes away to her bed in her kennel. She sleeps all night in an inside kennel and roams free in the garden some of the time.

She has been with us too long for such a lovely dog and needs a home of her own. She is born in August 2015.

ESTRELA MOUNTAIN DOG MALE

Kaleb was one of a litter of pups born on a “farm” and left to roam around freely. When two siblings were found dead on the road, he was taken to the municipal shelter. From there he was rescued by an English friend and taken to a proper home, a foster home, where he will stay until he comes to us for adoption. He was a bit shy and distant at first but soon learned to trust the family. These pups get badly treated, ignored, not handled by kind humans in these kind of circumstances. These beautiful creatures have no value for the place they are born. Bitches not neutered so have litters every 8-9 months. Who cares if a few die?? WE CARE.

We are looking for a home and family completely familiar with the breed.

An Estrela Mountain Dog orientated family who has knowledge, time and space to bring up this cutie. Remember they are a working breed, not lap dogs. They may look like Teddy Bears now but not for long. At the moment at 12 weeks he weighs 11 kg. Vaccinated and chipped. Estimated date of birth is 7 June 2021.

Mummy dog is small, about 9 kg and the pups are small, too. Will be small adults we expect. But not small in personality. Integrated with humans from day one, they are extremely social and playful. They also love other pups and dogs and people/kids. Will make wonderful family pets and companions.

Mum will be spayed soon and will also go for adoption. We could never put her back from where she originally came. No way.

LANA, now about 5 months old. Probable date of birth 20.05.2020. A bit shy but that will change as soon as she has a home.

Mother dog is being spayed. No more pups! Mission accomplished. Daddy is a handsome, very friendly, social German Shepherd.

We expect Lana to be a good medium size adult dog.

This time we tried to catch Luna with tranquilisers whilst she was pregnant but she is a tough cookie and nothing would knock her out enough for her to be captured.

After the pups were born we decided to arrange a search party in the area where we thought she was feeding her pups. To get social pups they need to be picked up around 5 weeks old. Eleven friends helped and it worked. They were living/hiding in a rock wall and getting them out from between the dangerous, slippery stones was not easy.

"Never give up" is our motto so we didn’t and eventually the six pups were extracted from their rocky, very uncomfortable hiding place. Three girls and three boys.

If you count the 3 girls from the spring litter, she has had at least six females in 8 months. If every one of these had been left in the wild, how many would there now be roaming and having more litters?

Food for thought for our council. How to catch her now???

Macey and her brother were found in an estufa, a plastic tunnel in which vegetables etc. are grown. There was no mother dog and so the puppies were fed by the people who worked there. But of course they cannot stay there. At this moment the greatest danger has passed, because they are with a foster family where they will receive nothing but love. Macey’s date of birth is early November 2020 and she will probably grow into a medium sized dog, but we do not have any certainty about that at the moment. We are now looking for a permanent home for this treasure. Who can provide this?

Matty was found all alone in an area where puppies had already been found. Because the woman who found him lives in an apartment and has to work full days, we were asked to take him in and of course we did. Matty is a really lovely puppy, he is a puppy as you would wish all puppies were, full of energy, a real little guy who knows what he wants. We estimate that he was born at the end of October 2020 and he is likely to become a large dog of around 30 kg. We are now looking for a permanent home for this treasure. Who can provide this?

When Maravilha, born 19 Januari 2021 was only a few days old, she was dumped in front of the gate of the shelter in the middle of the night along with a whole bunch of other puppies and a mother dog so that they would be found the next morning. And that of course happened and she was lovingly received by the volunteers of the shelter. When she was old enough and no longer needed her foster mother's milk, she came to our house. Now we are looking for a loving family who will take over from us and that forever. Maravilha will remain small, we estimate around 10 kg. Who has a golden basket for this little treasure?

Merlin was found together with his little brother Murray in an inhospitable area where puppies had already been found. How those puppies got there is a mystery because we have never seen a mother dog there. Because of Christmas and the Covid, there was no place available for these puppies in any inn, so there was no other option than to take them to a shelter. But we have promised them that once they are adopted we will come back to the shelter and take them to a home where they will be fostered until they are allowed to travel. Of course we hope that their stay in the shelter will be short-lived and that is why we are now looking for a beautiful home where this treasure can spend the rest of his life. Who has such a home? We believe that Merlin was born in the last week of October 2020 and will reach medium size when he reaches adulthood.

CAO DA SERRA DA ESTRELA

This is NAMORA rescued and taken to a municipal pound in the middle of Portugal. As usual, no chip, no identification at all so no owner.

When she was found roaming the countryside she could be picked up without problems. Sadly, the people who found her took her to the local municipal pound where we know they do very little to help the rescues. These places are notorious for their lack of empathy and conditions.

She had a series of marks around her neck where the fur was missing so we presume she had been chained up somewhere.

She is quite relaxed with people, plays and likes attention. Also good with other dogs. Cats we dont know. Walks quietly on the lead.

She has a typical Estrela personality and needs an experienced owner who knows and loves the breed and is prepared to invest in a rescue flock guardian dog. These types of dogs have a strong will of their own and are used to making their own decisions. We need to be gentle but firm.

Her estimated date of birth is early 2018 making her about 3 years old now. She weighs 40kg and is 60cm. Vaccinated and spayed.

Puppy Rocha was born in the algarve countryside, in a den her mother made in rocks several metres high. We had been trying to catch her for weeks but with no success. She is too scared of humans. Fortunately friends of ours helped us find the den in the rocks and after 4.5 weeks we went on a mission to capture the pups. Took 5 days to get all 6 out and some narrow escapes from injury. Due to their early contact with people the pups are extremely social and playful. Not afraid of anything or anyone and happy to play with other dogs of all shapes and sizes. Will make lovely pets also for children.
Date of birth is May 5, 2021, will be small/ medium adults as very finely built. Mum is about 14kg. Probable father about the same or a bit smaller.

Puppy Rochelle was born in the algarve countryside, in a den her mother made in rocks several metres high. We had been trying to catch her for weeks but with no success. She is too scared of humans. Fortunately friends of ours helped us find the den in the rocks and after 4.5 weeks we went on a mission to capture the pups. Took 5 days to get all 6 out and some narrow escapes from injury. Due to their early contact with people the pups are extremely social and playful. Not afraid of anything or anyone and happy to play with other dogs of all shapes and sizes. Will make lovely pets also for children.
Date of birth is May 5, 2021, will be small/ medium adults as very finely built. Mum is about 14kg. Probable father about the same or a bit smaller.

SCIPPY AND HIS BROTHERS are victims of neglect and indifference. Probably born in a home or a backyard from an unsterilised female and instead of being drowned at birth!!!!!!! were dumped in the wilderness somewhere at 5 or 6 weeks old, left to fend for themselves.

We have cases like this every week, everywhere in Portugal. People who do this have no conscience at all, no feelings, no heart for animals. Poor, sad examples of the human race. The three boys were found and brought here to us. They were ill from their ordeal, but have now recovered and looking for a loving home. Estimated date of birth is 12 August 2021. They will be medium sized adults. SCIPPY is very friendly and social with people and other dogs. Loves to run around and play. Who can help us, help him find his forever and ever home?

SKAY

MIXED BREED FEMALE

Skay and some other dogs were owned by a man who had an alcohol problem.

Fortunately, the man was able to get a place in rehab and Skay was taken by him to the shelter.

We are looking for a family with time and energy to walk and train her.

Skay weighs 13,8 kg and stands 40 cm at the shoulder. Her estimated DOB is 01-01-2018

SMUDGE

MIXED BREED MALE

SMUDGE saw our friend, a marathon runner, doing her training accompanied by her own dogs so decided to run along with them. Of course you can guess the rest, he wouldn’t go home and just stayed. No collar no chip, no identification as usual. But Smudge is a hunter and loves chickens and other things that move.

Since all our friend’s surrounding neighbours have livestock, Smudge needs to find another safe home.

He is extremely social with people, men, women, children, everybody and anybody. Obviously learnt from being out on the road in populated areas, who knows?  He is also good with other dogs of all genders and sizes. Cats we dont know as yet. Walks well on the lead and loves to sit in the car and look out of the window. All in all, a super dog to have as a pet. With his energy levels he needs an active family who have plenty of time to play ball games with him. Kids would be great.

Estimated date of birth is early 2018, weight 12 kg, height 44 cm. Who can give this great dog an even greater forever-more home?

STRAWBERRY

Strawberry is one of 7 pups born at our home on the night of the Strawberry Full Moon, 23/06/2021. Mother dog came to be spayed but was 6 days off having the pups and our vet thought it was too risky for her. We agreed to wait for the babies to be born!

Mummy dog is small, about 9 kg and the pups are small, too. Will be small adults we expect. But not small in personality. Integrated with humans from day one, they are extremely social and playful. They also love other pups and dogs and people/kids. Will make wonderful family pets and companions.

Mum will be spayed soon and will also go for adoption. We could never put her back from where she originally came. No way.

TORVAO

This young, energetic, social, lovable young male doggy was living on the streets with a drug addict.

Fortunately, the man was able to get a place in rehab and Torvao was taken in by the shelter.

We are looking for a family with time and energy to walk and train him. Kids would be perfect. We have no experience with him and cats but with his excitable nature he would probably be too much for an older cat.

Torvao weighs 12,6 kg and stands 43 cm at the shoulder. His estimated DOB is 01-03-2020.

Venus was born in a municipal shelter or “pound” as we call them. These places are a disgrace! They are forced by law to accept stray dogs and cats BUT do nothing more than just lock them up in small cages. They often do not even treat their parasites let alone neuter them. They are supposed to be supported by the govt. so where does the money go, we wonder?

Their mother got pregnant in the shelter, bingo, giving birth to several pups 9 weeks later.

The whole family was then moved to a private shelter to be treated and looked after. Yes, private, supported by private citizens like you and me!!! We then agreed to take these three cuties for adoption. Who will offer them a safe home in safe surroundings with a lovely cumfy basket to sleep in, instead of the cold concrete of a pound. Venus was born on December 7, 2020 and will be small/medium when adult. Mum weighs 15kg and of course is being neutered now that pups have gone.
