Amy was born in mid-March 2018. When she was not yet 6 weeks old, she and her brothers and sisters were dumped on the beach of Algarve. And so she ended up in the shelter at a young age. All her brothers have already been adopted, but Amy and her sisters are still there. And that is not her fault, but due to the fact that almost nobody in Portugal wants a female puppy. Amy is exceptionally social, immediately familiar with new situations and also with new people. She is regularly taken out on a walk and walks very well on the leash. It is fun to have such a dog in the house. She has lived in the shelter far too long and now it is her turn to have a house and a family of her own, something she has been looking forward to for so long. Amy will become a medium-sized dog.

When Benji and his brother Happy were about 6 weeks old they were found by hikers in a remote and hilly area far away from the civilized world. They had not been born there, nor had they walked that far, but probably dumped there in the middle of the night. The hikers could do nothing but take them and take them to the nearest vet. Good friends of ours, who take care of more than 100 cats, have taken these pups in their house and found already a happy home for Happy. Now we are looking for a happy home for Benji as well and if he could choose it would be a house with cats. Benji was born around June 20, 2018 and is expected to become a medium sized dog.

BIJOU

Bijou is about 10 years (born 2008), but she does't look that old. When Bijou was still quite young, she ended up in our shelter. How happy she was to be adopted by a very sweet lady. And she lived there happily for a long time, at least that was what she thought. But after 5 happy years her owner died. In the room there was a note stating that it was the wish of her owner, that if something happened to her, Bijou could please go back to our shelter. And of course that happened. That was more than 2 years ago. But now that her boyfriend has been adopted and moved to England, she is completely alone again. That is why we are now looking for a new home. Bijou weighs about 22 kg and is 55 cm tall. It is a very sweet dog, she likes to be cuddled or to play with her toys and she is good with all dogs. She is used to living with cats.

CARAMEL

Caramel, born around May 15, 2018, was thrown over the gate at night at a house of a woman who already has 12 dogs and no conditions to keep 12 dogs, let alone 2 puppies. And so he came to us. Caramel is obviously born in a house because he is extremely social. He is still very small at the moment, but we expect him to grow to a small middle size. Where can Caramel live without fear of being thrown over a gate somewhere in the middle of the night.

CHÉ

CHÉ was found running along the busy Algarve highway N125 completely disorientated and very afraid. Luckily someone stopped their car and managed to capture him and put him in. He would not be the first stray dog running along that road! Bad people who want to get rid of their dog, stop at a quiet spot, open the door, push the dog out and drive off as quickly as they can.

Ché stayed with his rescuers for a while but they couldn’t keep him for long so he went to a foster family.

He is very playful, energetic and needs space to run around and use up his energy. He walks ok on lead and is used to 9 cats. He will be a lovely companion for a young, active family who can take him everywhere including dog training classes for agility and obedience.

Ché is born on 20 May 2018 and weighs at 5 months 6,5kg. He will be a medium sized adult dog when adult.

Claudette was brought to our vet in a very poor, life threatening condition due to being covered in ticks. She had been rescued from a gypsy camp they told us. After specialist treatment in the clinic, our vet asked us to take care of her which we have done. She is now very well, growing fast and playing all day with Sky. She is extremely sociable and cuddly but with a will of her own. Claudette was born 22 August 2018 and will be small medium when adult.

Coco was born in a house on 1 May 2018 and she lived there with her mother, brothers and sisters until she was about eight weeks old. Children were probably her best friends. But then it had been long enough, because nobody wanted her, because in Portugal almost no one wants to have a bitch. And so she had to leave. But where to? She was too big and too old to be tipped into the garbage bin. So, the solution was to take her in the car and drive far away into the hills, preferably in the night. And so it happened. But Coco is not a dog that lies down in a corner and waits for what is coming. No, she would save herself and went out to find someone who wanted to help her. And so she arrived at a house, far away from the civilized world, and walked into the garden where four other dogs were playing. But one of those dogs did not like her and then we were called if we could help her. And now she lives with us. Coco is very social towards all people and other animals. She likes to play with her toys and when she does not, she will find something to keep busy. That is why we are now looking for a lovely family where she can live forever.

DRIBBEL

Dribbel was found completely disorientated and dehydrated running on the N125 highway in a temp of at least 35 degrees. Cars passed him from all sides but no-one stopped until a wine delivery man with a van spotted him while delivering along this highway. In spite of the traffic and the heat, he ran into the road and managed to get hold of the dog. Dribbel needed quite a few days and several litres of water to recuperate but now he is doing very well. Lovely, affectionate doggy deserves an affectionate and loving home. Good with other dogs.

Dribbel is about 7-8 months old and will be castrated soon. He has a long body and short legs, very cute.

And the two puppies are buried alive. A fate that could have happened to Eddy as well. Eddy is now growing up in a loving home environment and will become an exceptionally social puppy. The mother dog weighs about 10 kg and has relatively short legs. Eddy is much smaller than his sisters and we expect Eddy to grow to a little less than 10 kg.

The pups have all been adopted and now it's Helena's turn. Helena was born early February 2016, now weighs about 7 kg and is 29 cm high. Helena would feel very happy in a young family with smaller children, but of course it can also be with the grandfather and grandmother. Who has such a space for her?

Isha and her sister Inca were found in the wild near a cat colony that was being fed by local volunteers. There were 3 pups, about 10 weeks old at the time, all very ill, taken to the clinic by a kind lady where one died. The two sisters recovered and the lady took them home. Because she works all day, the pups were fed morning and night and left in a run for the rest of the time. One month ago, we were asked to help them. They are now about 9 months old and needed to be spayed after their first heat then. They came here for a week just before and after the surgery and are really very nice girls, a bit timid the first day but fine after they get to know you.
Because they are medium size and social we would love to find them a home. They will have no life at all if they have to stay in a small run for the rest of their lives. They do not need to be adopted together.
Isha weighs 15.5 kg. Estimated date of birth 02/04/2016.

Jeanie was dumped on the sandy path just past our shelter. It can not get any crazier anymore. She was less than 4 months old, lived all the time in a house, probably played with children, who took her on the leash for a walk. And then she has to leave, because she is a bitch that can get pregnant. Jeanie had clear characteristics that she had always worn a collar and is flawlessly on the leash as if she was never used to anything else. And now she is behind bars in our shelter and if she is not adopted now while she is still young, she may still be there in 10 years time. Jeanie is super friendly to everything and everyone and very socially to other dogs. She was born around June 13, 2018 and will probably become a medium sized dog.
We are now looking for a loving family where Jeanie can stay for the rest of her life.

Jelly Bean was delivered at the gate of the shelter together with three sisters, because the man, who brought her, could do nothing more with these females. No one wanted a bitch and he did not want to take them to the hills, where they certainly would die. Please could the people of the shelter take care of them. And of course we did that. The sisters were already about four months old and very used to people. Jelly Bean was born around January 15, 2018 and she will be a good middle sized dog. She is just a happy dog, very social, good with people, children and other dogs. We are now looking for a sweet family, where this happy dog fits in.

JOSÉ

José was born in February 2017 and weighs now about 7.5 kg. We do not know his way of life in his first year, but it was not too good. We only heared about him when we got a phone call in January 2018. An English tourist begged us to help a small pile of misery that hid in the bus station there. And where was there then. It was in the Albufeira bus station, a popular seaside resort in Algarve. But that's more than an hour away by car! She could not do anything herself, because next morning she had to go back home. So we did what we normally do in such cases. We called a colleague rescuer Isabelle, who runs a small private shelter in Albufeira called The Tiny Shelter and Isabel immediately got in her car and went to pick up José. José was indeed one pile of misery, full of fleas and ticks, almost no hair because of scabies, a situation we are used to and that we are no longer afraid of, and he got all the mediation that was needed. Now José is completely recovered and he looks forward to a home of his own where he never has to hide in a bus shelter. José is very sweet and social, both to people and to other dogs.

We don't know anything about the first months of Laila's life. We only got to know her when one of our foster mums was having dinner on the terrace of a restaurant in a small hamlet just north of us in the hinterland. A car stopped, the door opened, a dog was thrown out and then the car went off at high speed. No one knew the man, the car or the dog and our foster mother could do nothing but pick up the dog, put it in her car and take it home. Laila is estimated to have been born on October 19, 2017 and appeared to be very friendly from the very first day and social to people and other dogs. She is also grateful that she now has a home - albeit temporarily - and she also shows that. She walks around freely on the unfenced terrain and does not think about looking for her happiness elsewhere. Yet we are looking for a more permanent home for her, with lovely people, who can love her too, so that Laila will become even happier and happier. Laila weighs 17 kg with 8 months and will probably grow to 25 kg.

Luna was born on July 28, 2017. When she was about 4 months old she came to Portugal and became a victim of domestic violence. Luna lives in the shelter for 6 months now and recently the wife has given up Luna. That is why we are looking for a family in a colder climate than Portugal where Luna can enjoy the rest of her life. Luna is a young, lively dog, who likes to play with a ball. She knows the basic commands, walks well on the leash and does not have a problem with any dog around her.

In Portugal we have huge green garbage bins all along the roads, everywhere. This means everyone has plenty of locations where they can put their household waste easily and quickly. Just lift up the lid and throw your bin bag in, preferably closed and tied so the garbage wont spill into the actual bin.

These bins are a real relief to people who need to get rid of their newly born puppies. Just pop them in a bag and take them to your nearest garbage, open the lid and there you go, pups gone!!!

The “M” pups were found in this way and they were just a couple of days old. Disgusting human behaviour but we are used to all this now here in this wonderful, sunny Algarve. The pups have been lovingly bottle fed and are now (21-10-2018) about 7 weeks old. Will not be large dogs looking at their size and build at the moment. Date of birth is 26 August 2018.

Novak was born to Portuguese people on May 10, 2018. As we unfortunately often experience, Novak is the only survivor of the litter. He was lucky because he is a male. When he was about 3 weeks old, his mother became very ill and Novak ended up with his mother in the clinic of our vet. Unfortunately, his mother could no longer be saved and the vet had to put her down. The Portuguese people did not want Novak back. And the veterinarian thought that was fine, because in fact they did not want to give Novak back to those people. That is why we are now looking for a loving home for him. Novak is currently cuddled by the veterinary assistants all day long and he enjoys it. His mother weighed 21 kg and Novak will also become so big, maybe even a little bigger. Where can this sweetheart live?

OLGA was found roaming around the streets of a sea-side town that has a large campsite for tourists. Of course she was soon picked up and taken in for safety. Who wouldn’t pick up and hug a little bundle like her. Tourists come and then they go. So Olga was taken to a rescue centre and then brought to us for fostering until she can go for adoption. She is very lively, social with small dogs and kittens as well as people. She likes to sleep in bed. Olga was born on 21 March 2018 and will be a small dog when adult.

When you have a large animal shelter on top of a hill with a beautiful view, how easy it is to just go up there with 3 pups you do not want anymore because you have an unsterilised female who has pups every season. You take them out of your car, say, heh look at the wonderful view doggies, jump in the driving seat and off you go. When the shelter volunteers come along to walk the other dogs, naturally they meet the disoriented pups and take them in. So, three more dumped innocent souls in the shelter and the owner has already forgotten all about them until the next litter is born. Will they come to see the view again?

All three pups are very social and human oriented. Estimated date of birth is 13 June 2018. Olive will grow into a good middle sized dog as with 4 months of age she weighs already more than 10 kg.

OTTO

OTTO was found roaming around the streets of a sea-side town that has a large campsite for tourists. Of course he was soon picked up and taken in for safety. Who wouldn’t pick up and hug a little bundle like him. Tourists come and then they go. So Otto was taken to a rescue centre and then brought to us for fostering until he can go for adoption. He is very lively, social with small dogs and kittens as well as people. He likes to sleep in bed. Otto was born on 21 March 2018 and will be a small dog when adult.

ROCCO

MIXED BREED, MALE

Rocco was born on March 16, 2017 and was given as a small puppy to an older woman. This woman could not really take care of him, and when Rocco was a few months old, he was chained up, reducing his world from one day to the next to a few square meters. And he actually did not get any food, only when something was left when the woman had eaten herself. Luckily there was a neighbor, who every day took care of Rocco, who gave him water and regularly also something to eat. And this went on for at least a year until the owner was hit by a severe brain haemorrhage. Her sister then came to live with her to look after her and it is this sister who asked us to find a house for Rocco. We immediately removed him there and Rocco is now in a foster home with other dogs, children and a few cats. Rocco is very enthusiastic with his new life and shows this so now and then. That's why we think he's better off in a family with not too young children. Cats are not his favorite playmates. Rocco walks well on the leash, is sociable towards all people, loves attention and is actually an awkward teenager now and then. Where does this adolescent find his own basket?

RUBY

Ruby was delivered at the gate of the shelter together with three sisters, because the man, who brought her, could do nothing more with these females. No one wanted a bitch and he did not want to take them to the hills, where they certainly would die. Please could the people of the shelter take care of them. And of course we did that. The sisters were already about four months old and very used to people. Ruby was born around January 15, 2018 and she will be a good middle sized dog. She is just a happy dog, very social, good with people, children and other dogs. We are now looking for a sweet family, where this happy dog fits in.

SKY

SKY and another little female dog suddenly appeared in the garden of a house near Sao Bras that has no fencing. The house backs onto the hills and scrubland so anything can get in and out. After a few weeks, no-one claimed the dogs or even asked after a dog like Sky so the lady called us if we could help her with these two dogs and eventually to find them a home. Although both dogs are free to wander, they have stayed very close to the house proving they want human attention and food of course. Sky is one year old, weighs 9 kg and is about 35cm. She is cute and quite sociable with other dogs and the people of the house including a young boy. She is tested, spayed and vaccinated. So we would like to find her a loving family.

STELLA

Stella is probably a crossbreed Rafeiro do Alentejo and born around August 6, 2018. She was found and rescued from a place where several dead animals were found and we could not leave her behind. Despite the fact that she looked death in the eye, Stella is a cheerful and social puppy, who enjoyed laying on Marie-José’s lap all the way to the house of her foster mother. She now gets a life she deserves with people, dogs and cats, who love her. Probably, Stella will grow into a rather big dog. Who has a house, a garden and a heart that fits Stella.

SUNNY

TANIA

Tania was found wandering around the fields, all alone, and because she was so small everyone thought it was a very young puppy. She was taken to the municipal vet in our village, who actually had no space for her other than in a crate. Tania was well cared for and after a week or so he called and asked us if we could take care of the puppy because locking her up in the municipal shelter is also no solution for this little girl who - with 4.5 months - now weighs only 1100 grams. Tania still needs to gain some more weight, but will remain a really small dog. We think she was born 10 July 2018

THEA

Thea, a puppy, was all alone, abandoned, no other siblings, no mother anywhere. She saw some people having a party in a garden and decided to go take a look. Party means food, BBQ, nice smells. That’s what a hungry puppy needs. She hid under the chairs so no-one would see her at first but then some kind people helped her and took her home. Next day she was brought to the local animal shelter where she stayed until today. Today she came to visit us and we will now try and find her a home.

THETA

Theta was born on July 15, 2017. When she was about 3 months old she was found roaming the streets next to the bins in search of food. She was starving and dehydrated, but oh so glad that someone took her home. And she knows that she has been saved by a human being, because she loves all people and shows that very well. In that respect she is an exception, because most puppies found are afraid of people, keep away or crawl away, certainly in the beginning. Not Theta. She only wants to be with people and be taken on your lap. At the moment this is still possible, because with 4.5 months she weighs 8 kg. She will be a good medium size when adult.

Timmy and his brother Tommy come from a Portuguese home, where the owner had no interest to spay the females until the moment that all friends and family members already has been given a puppy and didn't want to have more. And so it happened that they asked our local shelter to take the puppies, which they did under the condition that the mother dog would be spayed. Timmy was born on 20 April 2018, is very social like his brother and will stay small.

TRISTAN

CÃO DA SERRA DA ESTRELA, MALE

TRISTAN is a small version of a Portuguese Mountain Dog, Cao da Serra da Estrela.
He was one of 30 PMD's we rescued from an old breeder in the north of Portugal in July 2014. The whole story is on our website under Estrela rescue.
All dogs were locked up in containers or wooden shacks or concrete cells and allowed to breed. Pups were born in these places and sold. Dogs were in terrible conditions and some died quite soon after the rescue. Others had tumours and other life threatening conditions and died in the first year after being rescued.
Tristan was rescued together with his mother Camilla and his sister Electra. Both are still with us.
Tristan is still very nervous of humans except us. We think allthough he is much better than his mother and sister that he will stay with us forever.

VICKY

Kids love playing at venues like Splash and Slide in the summer.
But do pups belong there? We dont think so?
Sadly this was the case of a stray mother dog and her litter. But along the busy road, mum and two pups got killed. So the rest of this family where picked up and rescued by one of our colleagues before they met the same end.
Pups are now about three months old, so born 10 February 2018, friendly and living with lots of cats. They will be medium sized adults.

WITNEY

Witney was born on or about August 16, 2016 in a hollow ancient carob tree, next to a house where an 80 year old woman lives. This woman did not know what to do and the only thing she could do was feeding the mother dog some rice. When the puppies were 7 weeks old, one of the neighbours told us about the pups and we went immediately to have a look. Once there, the only thing we could do was to fish the pups out of the hollow tree. It were 3 females and 4 males.

We wrote this in October 2016. 6 puppies (Wally, Walnut, Wanda, Wilma, Winston and Wobbly) were adopted in Belgium and the Netherlands. Puppy number 7 was Witney and she was adopted in Portugal. But to our suprise, Witney was recently dumped in the shelter with all sorts of false reasons and lies. And so we could do nothing but take her back. She is now almost 2 years old. She is particularly unhappy and does not know what happened to her and what she did wrong. We are therefore urgently looking for a new loving home for her where she will never have to fear that her owners will dump her into an shelter without her having done something wrong. With whom can she celebrate her 2nd birthday?

ZEE

ZEE is now about three years old (born May 2015) and weighs 36kg. He has lived in the vet clinic for two of those. He is a handicapped dog with only three legs. He was born into a situation where the people were ignorant of how to look after their dogs.

His father, a cross German Shepherd had been chained up there in a small outside area since a pup. This is thought to be quite normal here in Portugal. Their female had pups and more pups but the people did not sterilise her.

One day young Zee, then almost a year old, was playing around the patio but his dad did not like him..no, he’s a male and posses a challenge. He attacked his own son and bit him in the hind leg breaking the femur, the top bone. It was a complicated break and in spite of several surgeries, never healed properly and became so infected that the leg had to be amputated to save his life.

Zee is a wonderful dog, social with other dogs and people, affectionate, cuddly and very playful. He runs around on his three legs in his own special way and enjoys being a canine amputee. We are looking for a family who can give a 5 star home to this lovely boy. He cannot stay at the vet clinic much longer, not fair to the vets and absolutely not fair to the dog.
