ALFIE

ALFIE is a 5 month old pup, born 1 July 2022, who was spotted in a field 2 months ago with two siblings who sadly died of Parvo, the pup killer virus.
Alfie's story was told me from several different sources that I have knitted together with "large" stitches and a pinch of salt. The local council was informed and expected to come and pick him up....but nothing. Local people fed him but the longer pups stay without direct human contact, the shyer they get and more and more cautious of humans. Allegedly, people tried to catch him but never quite managed to.
So after the terrible thunder storms and torrential rain we were having, as well as appeals from dog loving friends, we decided to catch him ourselves and we did. Alfie is people shy but not dog shy so we are using another little rescue doggy, Scoutie, to help him and he is improving daily.

BLUES
MIXED BREED MALE
BLUES turned up in a friend’s garden around Xmas time. No chip or collar as usual. They felt very sorry for him so took pics and put up posters but to no avail. Nobody around had seen him before. So another abandoned puppy left to fend for himself.
He is now up for adoption to a good home. Blues is fully vaccinated and can travel. Estimated date of birth, 01/09/2022, weight 14kg. He will be a medium adult dog. He is extremely friendly with people and gets very excited in play.
At the moment, he is with us in foster and on the palm tree patio with Blondey and Bruna, a 12 year old Serra da Estrela female. Blondey teaches him manners and no problems with either female.

BRUCE
MIXED BREED MALE
The story of BRUCE is not one to tell on this page. Anyhow, he was a lost dog and we were asked to take him in until the owner could be found. Well, with no collar, no chip and no clues at all as to his home town, he is still homeless and is now for adoption.
Bruce is a very social, gentle, easy going young male, now castrated of course. He loves lots of attention from people, going on walks with other dogs, cuddles and stroking. Can sit on command for treats and wags his tail all the time. He does not like being confined to a small space and has possibly been kept on a chain before coming here.
Estimated DOB is 1 May 2018, he weighs 27 kg and stands 58 cm at the shoulder.

CATO is the palest of the litter as well as the largest, the big brother! Lots of white on paws and chest and look at his cute nose and eyebrows. When we observe the cool, calm, laid back male dogs lying on the grass verge by the Intermarche, year in year out, we have no doubt who the fathers are of this litter. Same as last year’s! He is very active and social with all other pups and dogs and loves to try and climb up on your lap but his legs are a still little too short. We expect him to be a good medium sized adult. Date of birth April 1, 2022.

Checo was taken to a private shelter from a municipal pound. He is super friendly. He loves human company, attention and cuddles. He wags his tail all the time. He gets along with all other dogs, males and females. He walks well on the leash. Super lovely dog. Will bring joy to any home.
Checo is born in April 2020, weighs about 9 kg and is 45 cm tall.

COMO IS A TRICOLOR… he is different shades of beige, white and black, all the colours of his mum and dad in subtle places. See he has a black collar of fur around his neck. Very smart. CUSHCOU born in a hollow Carob tree in the hills near Sao Bras. Discovered by a young boy when he heard them all crying...yes ALL, as there were 8 in total.
As puppies grew, mother dog left the hollow and pups started walking around on their journey of discovery. Kind neighbours down the hill started feeding them and pups became quite tame. Mother dog is lovely and very social. Six pups were taken by different people and homed. Two left. In the meantime, we were asked to help take mother dog plus another female for sterilisation which we did and became acquainted with the shepherd who actually owns the parent dogs. The father of the pups is a German Shepherd, very nice, quiet dog, loyal to his master.
Cushcou and his brother Didi are in foster with us and need homing quickly. Very social pups, with people and other dogs.
Estimated date of birth 08/09/2022. Wormed and vaccinated. Will be a medium size adult.

CROSS PINCHER FEMALE
ELSIE was seen by friends of ours wandering around their condo. After a couple of days they took her home because she obviously didn't have one to go to. No identification at all. No one knew her in the area so must have been dumped. Poor little girl and so friendly.
She is now in our care and we hope to find her a loving home.
Elsie is a tiny active dog and weighs at the age of 5 months 3.5 kg and measures 26cm at the shoulder, so will be a small dog when adult.

MIXED BREED MALE
FLIP was about 4 weeks old when he was found in a garden of a villa. It is quite impossible that he managed to find his way to and in the garden by himself, so we expect that someone has thrown him over the fence, which unfortubately is not unusual in Portugal. He is a very friendly boy and certainly born in a home environment. We think he was born on 20-12-2021.

FLYNN

Flynn was taken to a private shelter from a municipal pound and before that we were told he was removed from a hoarder with a number of other dogs.
He is very sweet and gentle, affectionate and cuddly. One of the most social dogs of the whole group brought to the shelter.
When people enter the kennel he is the first one to run and meet them. He loves human attention. He also walks well on the leash. He is social with other dogs.
Flynn is born in July 2019 and weighs about 10 kg. And with his short legs he measures only 35 cm.

KIKI

KIKI, was brought to us for spaying and then releasing back into the countryside where she lived. Unfortunately, it was too late for the spay as she was already 8 weeks and then it is too complicated . So on the night of the Strawberry Full Moon, she gave birth to 7 beautiful pups in a basket in a puppy kennel on our terrace. Adrian was there to help.
She was a wonderful mother for her pups and for us and all the visitors who came to see them.
All puppies were adopted to loving homes.
Kiki was spayed, tested negative for Med blood parasites and fully vaccinated.
She is now ready to go to a loving family with lots of energy as she is very energetic and playful. Loves furry toys and my slippers.
Kiki's estimated date of birth is October 4, 2020.
She weighs 9 kg and is 36 cm at the shoulder.
Great with all dogs large or small but not with cats or chickens.
Will make a great family pet.

THE LUNA LITTER.
Luna has lived around the Intermarche supermarket in Sao Bras, since she was a pup three years ago, also born from an Intermarche mother dog. We don’t know how many litters she has had up till this one, but at least three. The last litter before this one was this spring and we managed to catch 4, three of which were females, all adopted.
How long this is going to continue …..is the million dollar question.
This time we tried to catch Luna with tranquilisers whilst she was pregnant but she is a tough cookie and nothing would knock her out enough for her to be captured.
After the pups were born we decided to arrange a search party in the area where we thought she was feeding her pups. To get social pups they need to be picked up around 5 weeks old. Eleven friends helped and it worked. They were living/hiding in a rock wall and getting them out from between the dangerous, slippery stones was not easy.
"Never give up" is our motto so we didn’t and eventually the six pups were extracted from their rocky, very uncomfortable hiding place. Three girls and three boys.
If you count the 3 girls from the spring litter, she has had at least six females in 8 months. If every one of these had been left in the wild, how many would there now be roaming and having more litters?
Food for thought for our council. How to catch her now???

MOLLY-BABY was born from an accidental pregnancy. People have a young female dog, all vaccinated and chipped etc etc but have no idea when a bitch comes on heat. Kept in an enclosed patio, no male dogs can enter haha, so they think! A male dog can smell a bitch on heat miles away and will run a marathon to get to her.
We have arranged to spay the mummy dog and this is the last pup for adoption. Very active little girl, very social, expected to be less than 10 kg when adult. Born April 19, 2022.

Will these cases ever end? Not in our lifetime, no.

PODENCO CROSS MALE
Little Podenco RILEY is with us as a guest from Spain. He had no-where else to go than a cold, wintry dog pound because his ex owners left him and his friend literally in the cold.
He is a very friendly chap and gets on very well with all dogs in our group that run free together. Large and small, male and female.
All very active and full of energy. Intelligent and super people friendly.
In the house, he sleeps in a crate and is a bit noisy at feeding times. Must be used to eating first but here, last come, last served. Nights no problem and he is clean.
Riley is one year old, date of birth, 12/12/2021, vaccinated, chipped and neutered. He is of very slender build, weighs just under 10kg and is 46cm at the shoulder.

SCOUT
MIXED BREED MALE
SCOUT AND HIS BROTHERS are victims of neglect and indifference. Probably born in a home or a backyard from an unsterilised female and instead of being drowned at birth!!!!!!! were dumped in the wilderness somewhere at 5 or 6 weeks old, left to fend for themselves.
We have cases like this every week, everywhere in Portugal. People who do this have no conscience at all, no feelings, no heart for animals. Poor, sad examples of the human race. The three boys were found and brought here to us. They were ill from their ordeal, but have now recovered and looking for a loving home. Estimated date of birth is 12 August 2021. They will be medium sized adults. SCOUT is very friendly and social with people and other dogs. Loves to run around and play.

SCOUTIE
MIXED BREED SMALL MALE
SCOUTIE was found by friends on the main road to Alportel in front of their house. He was obviously lost and disorientated and in a precarious environment as that road is quite busy and they drive fast.
They took him in for a while but could not keep him there long due to the reaction of their own dog, so called us and brought him here to our emergency kennel.
That lovely place under trees and surrounded with Passion Flower vines used to be my meditation and reading patio. Little did I know then it would serve as a place to temporarily keep rescue pups and dogs.
Many have passed through and consequently found a home. Let’s hope we can do the same for little Scoutie.
His estimated date of birth is 16 March 2021, he weighs 7,5 kg and stands 30 cm at the shoulder. Has been neutered and vaccinated.
Scoutie loves people and other dogs, with cats we don’t know yet but will do our cat test if necessary.

SHIVA was dumped in her local shelter by her alleged owner! He moved house and didn’t want her anymore, at least that was his excuse. So easy to get rid of their “heritage dogs” here in Portugal. What kind of owner does this? Well I can tell you there are plenty.
The shelter volunteers told me Shiva spent the first days sitting at the door of her run, pining and just looking and waiting. Every time someone came to that entry gate she ran up to them thinking she was going “home”. In the meantime, she has been in the shelter for several months, is spayed, vaccinated and tested for Med. blood parasites.
It is time for us to find her a permanent and forever, loving home. No more dumping in shelters. She needs lots of TLC and her own big basket to sleep safely in. She needs to feel safe and wanted.
She is social and friendly with everyone, even tolerant of cats and fine with kids. She walks quite well on lead in the shelter area. Enjoys the exercise.
Date of birth is January 2019, weight 32kg, height 55cm.

SOUL

Serra da Estrela “SOUL” was spotted in a small run at a municipal holding kennel in central Portugal some months ago
I asked a friend to get him out of there and to cut a long story short..SHE DID. After a spell in my friend’s shelter, he is now with us down here in training, learning to live in a normal house and garden, walk on a lead etc etc.
Soul has been reserved by a family in UK who already have a female and very much wanted a male companion for her. *Take heed, both dogs have been neutered of course.*
He is a fabulous boy, both in looks and temperament and learns really quickly. The doggy Gods are with him, that’s for sure. Soul is estimated to be around two years old.

THIERRY

Little THIERRY was found all alone, no mum, no siblings. Who can just dump one pup in the countryside and walk away?
He is now here with us all safe and sound and looking, waiting for his new permanent home.
He is a very active boy, very social and eager to play and play rough with any of our dogs. Some love it, some run away.
Thierry sleeps in a crate all night, no noise and completely clean.
His estimated date of birth is 01-12-2022 and he will be a medium size adult.

MIXED BREED FEMALE
Three lovely pups born under the Wolf Full Moon, 17th January 2022 to a homeless mother dog.
She made her "nest" in an old shed full of junk in the countryside and only when someone heard them crying did anyone know they were there.
We captured the mum when pups were 5 weeks old. She will be spayed as soon as possible.
Pups are really friendly and love people and other dogs. We are now looking for loving homes. Pups will be vaccinated, wormed etc following our protocol.
